Who we are

Emmaus House was started in 1987 by Sister Shirley Orand and Sister Marietta Fritz.  The ministry began as an extension of their jail ministry when Sister Marietta became aware that many of the women who where released from jail returned to the streets.  It was apparent that women being released from jail, prison and drug rehab needed a safe place to live while re-establishing their lives.

Our purpose is to provide the women with a family-like Christian atmosphere while they are creating new lives for themselves. We do not judge or dwell on the past. We believe that all of our women are unique, precious creations from God. Our mission is to join them in their journey, walking along side them on the road to physical, emotional, and spiritual healing, just as Christ did on the road to Emmaus.

Expectations

At the Emmaus House we live and function as a family in a sober living environment. To facilitate this, the following expectations are mandatory.

  • You must be coming directly from jail, prison, or rehab. You will be given a drug screen test upon entering the Emmaus House. You must be clean and sober in order to stay. If not, we will assist you in getting into rehab.

  • We do random drug and alcohol screens.

  • You are required to attend a daily 12-step meeting, 2 groups weekly, meet with a therapist weekly, acquire a sponsor and recovery coach, and attend church on Sundays.

  • We will request a mental health evaluation if seen as needed; refusal may result in termination.

  • Accountability is mandatory; for example, a staff member must be notified if you plan to be away for meals.

  • Share in prayer/reflection at morning meditation and in all house activities.

  • Follow all rules for making appointments, doing chores, demonstrating respect for others and their property at all times.

Unique Features

  • Our House

Currently, we own and operate 6 homes. Our facilities house up to 33 women. We provide our guests with a family-like environment, including a private bedroom, shared meals, and devotional/meditation time daily.

  • We Provide the Next Step

All of our guests begin their residence in the main house. Each guest is on a 30 day orientation. After the 30 days most guests are eligible to move to a step up house at the discretion of the Director and case manager. All of  our homes have a house manager. The house managers provide guidance, support and supervision as they continue to help the guest successfully move into transitional living.

  • Length of Stay

We do not impose time limits upon our guest. We encourage them to stay with us until they are prepared to live independently. The average stay is 6 months to a year.
